Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), is the medical use of oxygen at a level higher than atmospheric pressure.
HBOT has been used since the 1930s to treat decompression sickness. It is also used to treat a variety of acute and chronic medical conditions. It consists of a special chamber, called a pressure chamber, which allows the patient to obtain high levels of oxygen in the blood. The air inside the pressurized chamber is typically 2.5 times greater than normal atmospheric pressure, equivalent to being 45 feet underwater.
The blood can then carry larger amounts of oxygen and bring this oxygen to organs and tissues. The concentration of oxygen at this level facilitates the growth of blood vessels and tissues by increasing circulation.
HBOT involves your child (or both of you together) sitting in a pressurized air chamber while pure oxygen is administered at a controlled pressure. HBOT usually last 60 minutes per session. Your child may up to 2 sessions a day. The total number of sessions will vary, but it’s common for treatment to start at 40 sessions over the course of several weeks.
In studies, increased oxygen intake and tissue saturation has shown promising results for children with neurological disorders.
HBOT is not provided by the NHS, however it is available privately, for more information click the following link: www.mstherapy.org.uk
